There are so many martial arts to choose from – from the well know Karate and Kung Fu to the lesser known Systema and Bakom.  But how do you know which one is right for you?

The truth is, you don’t.  Until you try it.  And even then, you need to ensure that the form of martial art and the school matches your expectations and ambitions.

So why Hapkido, and why Hapkido Hosinsul?

Hapkido is what you could call ‘reality-based’ self defence.  We use traditional techniques such as strikes, locks, kicks and throws, but at Hapkido Hosinsul we apply them to hypothetical situations you may dread to find yourself in.

We teach techniques, skills and most importantly confidence to our students so that should they ever find themselves in a situation where they need to defend themselves, they can.  And they will.

Why is Hapkido different?

Hapkido is a fairly ‘passive’ form of self defence.  When confronted, we make it clear that we do not want to fight.

Unlike other martial arts where you may raise your fists and take a fighting stance if threatened, we don’t.  We take a guard stance to protect ourselves.  It’s non-threatening and it’s non-confrontational.

Ideally if we can escape the situation without any contact, we will.  And we are not ashamed to say our first instinct would be to run.  But if we need to, we will fiercely defend ourselves.

At Hapkido Hosinsul we also spend time on improving our agility, flexibility, endurance, fitness and strength.  Push-ups; crunches; lunges; planks; relay races… you name it.

Our warm-up lasts about 20 minutes and it’s basically a short sharp circuit training session.  So fitness is a key part of our training regime.  And as much as we complain about being exhausted at the end of our warm-ups, secretly we love them.

Our black-belts have over 85 years worth of martial arts experience between them, most of which is in the art of Hapkido.  And there’s good reason for that – they genuinely have a passion for it.

So if you’re considering a martial art, or looking to learn some self defence, we’d love you to come along and give us a try.

Plus!  To encourage newbies to try Hapkido Hosinsul, we offer three trial classes for $45 so you can try us before you officially come join us.  Hopefully see you soon!
